Skiing underwear at DILLING is made from merino wool, designed for use as the first layer in a ski outfit. Skiing generates high levels of body heat during descents and sustained cross-country effort, followed by rapid cooling during lift rides and rest periods. This repeated cycle is one of the most demanding conditions for underwear to manage: the base layer must absorb perspiration during exertion and then continue to insulate effectively during rest. Merino wool is suited to this role because it manages moisture without releasing it rapidly to the skin surface during cooling.
The skiing underwear range at DILLING includes merino base layer tops and bottoms in weights suited to different skiing conditions, from lightweight layers for high-output cross-country and ski touring to mid-weight constructions for resort skiing in cold temperatures.
The standard alternative to merino wool in ski base layers is polyester. Polyester wicks moisture rapidly to the fabric surface where it evaporates, which keeps the skin dry during sustained high-output effort. The problem arises during rest: when the body cools quickly on a chairlift, a damp polyester base layer rapidly loses its insulating properties and the moisture already on the fabric surface feels cold against the skin. Merino wool manages moisture differently: it absorbs perspiration into the fibre itself, releasing it slowly, which keeps the skin warmer during the transition from effort to rest.
Merino ski base layer tops at DILLING sit close to the skin under a mid layer and ski jacket, managing perspiration from the torso during skiing. Crew neck styles work under any ski jacket collar; zip-neck styles allow ventilation at the neck during high-effort sections without removing layers. Long-sleeved tops provide coverage at the wrists under ski gloves, which can be a significant cold point during lift rides.
Merino ski base layer bottoms, leggings or tights, are the first layer on the lower body, worn under ski trousers. They provide insulation at the thighs and lower leg, where contact with ski boot cuffs and cold air during lifts creates heat loss. A merino base layer bottom also reduces friction between the skin and the stiff lining of ski trousers during a long day on the mountain.
For resort skiing in moderate cold, a single merino base layer top and bottom under a standard ski jacket and trousers is typically sufficient. For cold-weather resort skiing or cross-country skiing in sub-zero conditions, a mid-weight merino base layer provides additional insulation. For ski touring with high sustained output, a lightweight merino layer manages moisture more effectively without the overheating that a heavier construction can cause during extended uphill sections.
Merino skiing underwear can be machine washed on a wool cycle at 30°C. Lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry. Washing after each day of skiing maintains the performance of the merino fibre and the elasticity of the waistband and cuffs. Full care instructions are on each product label.
