Four reasons for choosing merino wool for sport & outdoor leisure, all year round

Synthetic fibres such as polyester have been the most common choice for sport and outdoor wear for many years now. However, merino wool has started to give it competition, and not without reason. With merino wool, nature has created a material that can, for example, help keep you warm, dry and odour-free, all year round.

Four reasons for choosing merino wool for sport & outdoor leisure, all year round

As many people know, wool is ideal for keeping you warm on cold days, but actually merino wool is also suitable when the great outdoors are calling. For instance for those early morning runs during the spring, summer bicycle rides or autumn hikes when the landscape changes colours around you. Wool has some excellent properties that makes it sort of a wonder material if you ask us.

1. KEEP YOU WARM WHEN IT IS COLD AND COLD WHEN IT IS WARM

Merino wool has a lot of small air pockets in its structure, which means that it can insulate against the heat as well as the cold. In nature this helps sheep keep a comfortable temperature all year round, regardless of the climate and the level of activity – and the wool will do the same for you.

2. ABSORBS MOISTURE AND KEEPS YOU DRY

Merino wool can absorb up to 33% of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet. Once again that is due to the little air pockets in the structure of the wool fibre. Wool wicks moisture away from the skin and binds it inside the air pockets. This makes the wool really comfortable to wear for sport and outdoor activities, since it does not become moist, as you can sometimes experience with synthetic fibres or cotton. Wool underwear makes it easier for the skin to breath. If wool become wet, it still insulates and keeps you warm, even during breaks.

3. PROTECTS AGAINST BAD ODOUR

One of the greatest advantages of wool for sport and outdoor activities is that wool protects you against smelling of sweat. Yes that is true. First of all, it is important to point out that sweat has no smell in and of itself. It is only when sweat sits on your skin that it is attacked by bacteria, causing the familiar sweat odour. When wool absorbs sweat, as is described above, it becomes bound by the wool structure. The bacteria cannot penetrate it, and therefore cannot cause the sweat to smell bad. Thus the wool helps to prevent sweat odours, and your wool underwear will not smell bad, like fabrics such as polyester tend to do. It can also be a benefit when you are going travelling, since you can wear clothes for several days and therefore can bring less luggage.

4. THIN AND WONDERFULLY SOFT

Merino wool is amazing for underwear, since the material feels wonderfully soft on the skin. The reason why merino wool is used for sport and outdoor garments is because it is thinner and finer in the wool fibre than other wool types. You can therefore get all the great properties of the wool in a lightweight and breathable quality, where there is room for movement.
