Allergic diseases are some of the most common chronic diseases and worldwide they affect the daily lives of millions of people. It is estimated that 21 million people in the UK live with an allergic disease. Around 200,000 people in the UK suffer from asthma so severe that there are currently no effective treatments and approximately 20% of all UK children have eczema.
Despite the overwhelming number of people in the UK that suffer from allergies, asthma, or other related diseases, these chronic diseases receive very little attention. This is where we, alongside you our customers, want to make a difference.
Once again - instead of offering discounts on Black Friday - we are donating 20% of the turnover from Black Friday to charity. By placing an order on our website on Friday the 26th of November 2021, together we will – for the third year in a row - donate 20% of the turnover to Allergy UK and their work supporting people living with all types of allergies.
Although allergic diseases often are not life-threatening, they can cause different kinds of irritations and discomforts that can result in a reduced quality of life. This is something Trine and her two oldest children, Karla and Alfred, have experienced firsthand. We visited Trine and her family to learn more about their daily lives living with asthma and allergies.
Research around allergies has always been a case close to our hearts, especially because our customers often wear our products right next to the skin.
As a company, we have also experienced allergies up close, when - back in the 1980’ies - our former dye master, Birthe Jensen, developed a severe formaldehyde allergy. Ever since her diagnosis, we have worked passionately to develop processes that would secure a production that is both gentle to the environment and allergy friendly. This means, that you are always ensured that your DILLING product has been dyed without the use of heavy metals and dried exclusively using air. On your merino wool products, the itchy hairs are removed using an environmentally friendly enzyme treatment or electricity – and our products are always free from harmful chemicals.
We asked Simone Miles from fundraising at Allergy UK how last year’s donation was spent and how they plan to spend this year’s Black Friday donation.
Last year’s donation funded the development and review of Allergy UK’s information resources. The donation helped to resource an internal clinical review of factsheet content and an external review by a professional peer to ensure that the information within the factsheet was up to date, accurate and the best quality it could be for people living with allergy. Allergy UK has over 60 factsheets available for free on their website that cover the breadth of allergic disease.
We would like to allocate the donation to help run the Helpline. The Helpline receives just over 3,600 calls each year. The calls are received by our Helpline advisers to offer advice. We also have in-house nurses and dietitians that will offer 1-1 telephone support and advice.
It is estimated that 21 million people in the UK live with allergic disease. But a huge gap in healthcare services for those affected by this disease of the immune system remains. The aim of the organisation is to raise the profile of allergy at all levels, with a vision for everyone affected by allergy to receive the best possible care and support.
